Live at Café Cartouche

After much anticipation, we made our overseas return with a gig at Café Cartouche in Hilversum on Sunday, 19th May 2024. This marked a significant moment for us, as it had been a decade since our last show in Hilversum back in 2014.

Naked

Recorded at the gone, but not forgotten, Bar Central in Milton Keynes, at the end of the 90s, we've gone deep in to the archives to find the highlights of our one and only acoustic show (so far).  This was a special gig, with a couple of violinists joining us on stage for a few numbers, a track never played before (or since) called Follow Me Down, and reworkings of a few of our set list staples.

We hope this will transport you back to when we were young and bring a flood of happy memories.

Eat Less / Move More

PlasticSole

We're thrilled to announce that our single, "Eat Less / Move More," hit the airwaves on September 1st, 2024. 🎉 This track is more than just music—it's a lifestyle anthem that'll get you grooving and thinking about health in a whole new way.

The first verse and chorus of the song sprang to life in the mind’s ear of guitarist, Simon Brindle, one morning when he was contemplating the fact he was nearing 50. The song grew when the rest of PlasticSole got in the rehearsal studio and thrashed it out. It came to life, though, on the stage, when PlasticSole encouraged chanting fans to Eat Less / Move More.

The Fathers of Geography

PlasticSole

Introduction

Hello, music lovers! We’re PlasticSole, an indie band from Milton Keynes, known for our unique blend of grunge rock and pop. We’re excited to present our latest album: “The Fathers of Geography.”

The Genesis

“The Fathers of Geography” is not just an album, but a heartfelt project that spans years. The idea was conceived during a ferry ride in June 2014, after our European tour. Amidst the rhythm of the waves, forgotten songs resurfaced, and the journey of this album began.

Recording Journey

We started recording in September 2014, driven by our shared passion. Unbeknownst to us, it would take almost a decade to complete this project. Our studio bore witness to our dedication and late-night epiphanies, with each track adding a new chapter to our musical journey.

Tracklist

  1. All That You Wanna Be
  2. She’s On My Mind
  3. Pop Quiz
  4. Where Do You Go?
  5. The Black Beans of Monaco
  6. Cure for the Common Cold - Remix
  7. 1988
  8. Uh oH
  9. Tomorrow’s You Know 2023
  10. Instamatic Camera
  11. Nobody’s Perfect
  12. Northern Girl - Remix
  13. Police Woman
  14. Stupid Anyway
  15. The Ballad of Carla and Samuel

Explicit vs. Clean Versions

We understand that musical tastes vary. That’s why we’re offering both an explicit and a clean version of the album. Whether you want to dive headfirst into the raw emotions or prefer a more polished experience, we’ve got you covered.

Streaming

“The Fathers of Geography” is available on all major streaming platforms starting June 1st via the  links below:

Bandcamp

For our devoted fans and fellow music explorers, we’ve curated something truly special—a Deluxe Edition of our album, available exclusively on Bandcamp. This edition takes you behind the scenes, offering a glimpse into the raw, unfiltered evolution of our songs.

What can you expect from this musical treasure trove?

  • Demos and Live Versions:
These are the embryonic versions—the sketches on napkins, the late-night whispers in dimly lit studios or the sweaty music venues that were The Pitz and MADCAP. You’ll hear the before—the moments when inspiration struck, and melodies were born. Imperfections and all, these demos capture the essence of our creative process.

As PlasticSole, we’ve embarked on a voyage—one that spans years, countries, and emotions. With this Deluxe Edition, you’ll trace our footsteps. From the beginning, through that ferry ride back in 2014 to the countless late nights in the studio, every note carries a story. It’s a testament to our growth, our camaraderie, and our unwavering love for music.

So, fellow travelers, head over to Bandcamp and immerse yourself in the musical DNA of “The Fathers of Geography.” Let the demos whisper secrets, and the live versions transport you to the concert halls of yesteryear. This is where our songs shed their skins and reveal their souls.

Remember: Music isn’t just about the final product; it’s about the journey that echoes through every chord and lyric.

PlasticSole returned to Holland for a Café Cartouche gig

After much anticipation, PlasticSole made our overseas return with a gig at Café Cartouche in Hilversum on Sunday, 19th May 2024. This marked a significant moment for us, as it had been a decade since our last show in Hilversum back in 2014.

We were so happy to to reconnect with all the amazing friends we made during our previous visit and to make new memories together. It was a night filled with music, laughter, and good vibes!

We were thrilled to welcome Rachel, an accomplished singer-songwriter from Australia, who we shared the stage with. Rachel's music has graced the airwaves with her well-known band, ‘ Rachel and Henry Climb a Hill’.  You can find her music on Spotify and other streaming platforms. Having made Hilversum her home to raise a family, Rachel was excited to return to the stage, and it was a truly captivating performance.

Thank you Hilversum! 🎶🌟

Stupid Anyway

PlasticSole

Yeah, as if we were going to leave it at 12....

This one features the wonderful Dan Tiplady on vocals and I think it has only ever been performed once live, during our one and only acoustic show at the legendary Bar Central.  That recording of that gig may see the light of day one day...

And here’s the kicker: "Stupid Anyway" a bonus 13th track in our ambitious 12 Songs in 12 Months campaign. That’s right, we’ve gone above and beyond, delivering an extra dose of musical magic for our dedicated listeners, and it is ready to rock your playlists! 🌟

Stupid Anyway is a powerful anthem that explores the struggle for self-acceptance and individuality. The heartfelt lyrics and catchy melodies resonate with listeners of all ages, urging them to embrace their uniqueness and defy societal norms.

Starting today, you can stream Stupid Anyway on your favourite streaming platforms. Whether you're a Spotify addict, or an Apple Music aficionado we've got you covered.

The Ballad of Carla and Samuel

PlasticSole

We basically did what the Beatles did with their last 3 singles, taking a Dan Tiplady acoustic demo and then each band member adding their own touches.  The whole thing took place over a 10 year period.

The Ballad of Carla and Samuel emerged through a fascinating creative journey, akin to the collaborative methods employed in the recent Beatles singles. The song began as an intimate acoustic demo in a cozy living room. Each band member then added their touch to transform the demo into the full song you can hear today. The track is number 12 in our 12 songs in 12 months challenge.

🎵 About the Song:

“The Ballad of Carla and Samuel” weaves a mesmerising tale of social media, love, crime, and fate. Its haunting melody echoes through time, capturing raw emotions and the inexorable pull of destiny. Imagine a clandestine affair fuelled by stolen moments, forbidden kisses, and secrets hidden in shadows.

🔍 Discover “The Ballad of Carla and Samuel” today! 🔍

🎧 Listen on your favorite streaming platform and immerse yourself in this captivating tale. Whether you’re a music lover, a romantic, or a mystery enthusiast, this song will draw you in

My Ticketmaster Nightmare: "Transaction declined based on your payment settings for the profile”; how I Took Control and Found Answers

I'm sharing my experience here in the hopes that anyone facing a similar ordeal in the future might stumble upon this post via a web search and find the empowerment to take charge of their situation.

When I attempted to register for the Pearl Jam Ten Club Lottery for the Manchester UK show, I encountered a persistent error message:

"Transaction declined based on your payment settings for the profile."

Seeking assistance, I reached out to Ticketmaster's support team, and initially received assurances that my issue was a priority.

"I'm looking into this for you at the moment, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible – please be assured we are treating this as priority."

However, 3 days passed without any follow-up or resolution, despite me asking for one, meaning the the registration period to closed without the promised priority support.

I contacted support once more, only to be met with dismissive responses akin to "tough luck."

Frustrated by the lack of accountability, I raised the question of a refund for my Pearl Jam Ten Club subscription fee, as I pay that subscription fee to be able to register for that lottery and their system let me down. Unsurprisingly, my request was denied.

Persisting in my quest for answers, I sought clarification on what went wrong and how to prevent similar issues in the future. What ensued was literally a month-long back-and-forth with support staff, filled with evasive responses and futile attempts to respond to queries I didn't make.

Eventually, after much persistence and an escalation within Ticketmaster's ranks, I received a response claiming that after a thorough investigation, the issue lay at my end.  To which I replied, that I know they didn’t thoroughly investigate my issue, because if they did they would know I actually got tickets (which I did after around the 100th attempt on the 2nd day, after literally trying the same thing for 2 days).

Desperate for clarity, I asked for an explanation for the message, "Transaction declined based on your payment settings for the profile", and a resolution to prevent its recurrence. Ticketmaster's response, having been caught in a lie and seemingly now actually investigating, pointed to me having, according to their system, two credit cards listed in my account and advising me to delete the erroneous card.

I refuted their claim, providing a screenshot, from their mobile app, demonstrating that only one credit card was linked to my account. Finally, with evidence that there was a problem in their system, Ticketmaster took some action and removed the phantom card from their system.

While this resolution may not guarantee the absence of future issues, it demonstrates the power of persistence and evidence to hold corporations accountable for their shortcomings, who have a vested interest in blaming us, because then they don’t have to do anything.

If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don't hesitate to advocate for yourself and demand transparency from Ticketmaster. By sharing my experience, I hope to empower others facing similar challenges to stand their ground and compel Ticketmaster to conduct thorough investigations and provide satisfactory resolutions.

Remember, you deserve better, and don't let Ticketmaster off the hook without a fight.

1988

PlasticSole

Love this song. I think it was the first one we played together in our first rehearsal back in autumn 1995, when 1988 seemed so long ago!!!

I took this photo on the same trip to London as the cover photo from the previous single, She's On My Mind.  It features my mother, who I noticed was perfectly framed by the London Underground signature tubelike tunnels.  Really nice to be able to feature her in some of the band's artwork, as she is so integral to the lore of the band.

I took this photo on a train to London.  The scene encapsulated, for me, young love, two people happy in each other's company, to the exclusion of the rest of the world.

2023-01-05 Stowe Gardens

A Walk in the Past and Present at Stowe Gardens

I visited the National Trust Gardens at Stowe, a magnificent landscape garden in Buckinghamshire.  I was not disappointed by the beauty and history of this place, which boasts over 40 temples and monuments, stunning vistas and lakes, and a variety of wildlife. I also had the chance to see two moving art installations that pay tribute to the heroes of D-Day and the diversity of British birds.

Stowe Gardens was created in the 18th century by the Temple-Grenville family, who used it as a backdrop for their political and social ambitions.  The garden reflects their vision of an ideal world, inspired by classical antiquity, the Renaissance, and the Enlightenment. Each temple and monument has a symbolic meaning, representing different aspects of human nature, society, and culture.

I spent about three hours walking around the garden, admiring the different styles and themes of each area. Some of the highlights were the Elysian Fields, where I saw the Temple of Ancient Virtue and the Temple of British Worthies; the Grecian Valley, where I enjoyed the view of the Gothic Temple and the Temple of Friendship; and the Eastern Garden, where I crossed the Palladian Bridge and marvelled at the Chinese House.

One of the most impressive features of the garden was the abundance of water, which added to the beauty and tranquillity of the scenery.  The lakes, ponds, and waterfalls were very full with water, thanks to the recent rains.  I especially liked the Cascade, a waterfall that flows from the Eleven-Acre Lake to the Octagon Lake, creating a dramatic contrast between the calm and the turbulent waters³.

The first art installation that I discovered was "A Winter’s Tail – Seasonal Wildlife Trail" where we, amongst other things, spotted giant bird sculptures.  The installation features lots of different species of birds, from swans  owls and eagles, each with their own distinctive shape and colour.  The sculptures are placed throughout the Chinese garden section of the property, creating a sense of harmony and diversity between nature and art.

The second art installation that caught my eye was by 'Standing with Giants', which will be used in Normandy for the upcoming 80th anniversary commemorative events of D-Day.  The installation consists of nearly 200 silhouettes of soldiers and poppies, representing the number of fatalities under British command on 6 June 1944.  The silhouettes are arranged in rows across the meadow fields of the garden, creating a striking visual impact and a poignant reminder of the sacrifice and courage of those who fought for our freedom.

I took some photos of the garden and the installations and created a Flickr slideshow to share with you. You can view it below or click here to see it on Flickr. I hope you like them as much as I did taking them!

Stowe Gardens is a place where you can experience the past and the present, the natural and the artificial, the sublime and the tragic. It's a place where you can appreciate the beauty of nature, the power of art, and the value of peace. If you're interested in visiting, you can find out more information here.
