2023-12-28 Christmas At Kew

My Magical Evening at Christmas At Kew

I had the opportunity to visit the Christmas At Kew Gardens 2023 exhibition, a spectacular light trail that transforms the botanical gardens into a winter wonderland.  It was one of the most amazing experiences of it's kind I’ve ever had, and I want to share some of the highlights with you.

The exhibition ran from 15 November 2023 to 7 January 2024, and featured eight new installations along the trail, including giant illuminated flowers, cascading lights suspended from the tree canopy, and 100 ‘floating’ candles.   For the first time, Kew’s iconic contemporary art installation, The Hive, also features on the trail, creating a mesmerising display of sound and light .

The trail is about 3km long and takes about 2 hours to walk around, while stopping for refreshments and attractions along the way. There are plenty of options to satisfy your taste buds, from hot food and sweet treats to spiced winter warmers and hot chocolate. You can also toast marshmallows over a fire pit, enjoy a fairground ride, or catch a glimpse of Father Christmas .

The best part of the evening, however, was seeing the stunning light shows that illuminated the gardens with vibrant colours and patterns. Some of my favourites were the Cathedral of Light, a 100m-long tunnel of over a million pea-lights; the Firework Trees, a grove of heritage trees wrapped in sparkling lights that changed colour to music; and the Palm House Finale, a dazzling display of lasers and projections on the iconic glasshouse .

I took some photos of the exhibition and created a Flickr slideshow to share with you. You can view it below or click here to see it on Flickr. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

The producer and I had real fun I the studio adding the brass section at the end.  We learned, amongst other things, that a tuba cannot be played sole without sound comedic.  Use it, as we have done here, with other instruments, and it sounds lovely, but on its own it just makes you laugh.

Broken Wolf discuss The PlasticWolf Project from their perspective

It was an utter pleasure to share the studio with these awesome chaps, and such a delight to hear them talk about the experience.

The PlasticWolf Project

PlasticSole

I still can't believe we managed to pull this off in just one day. Stepping into the studio with these incredible musicians was definitely an experience I'll cherish for a long time.

It was a totally unexpected one day event; a couple of months ago, the challenge was laid down, then a few weeks ago we just got in a room, and pressed record, captured the magic, overlayed the vocals, mixed, mastered, and released. The second track really captures the spirit of the day, warts and all, and is devoid of any overdubs or effects.

I'm so glad I pushed myself this time. It was an amazing experience, and I'm so proud of what we created.

These guys are all natural-born musicians, but more than that, every single one of them checked any hint of an egotistical attitude at the door and everyone took part in nothing but a collaborative spirit.

If you have a spare few minutes, please give our song a listen and watch the video.

And if you're feeling a little bit lost or stuck in a rut, remember that it's always worth stepping outside of your comfort zone. You never know what you might be capable of.

"Breaking the Law" is a song by English heavy metal band Judas Priest, originally released on their 1980 album British Steel.

Songwriters:
  • Rob Halford
  • K. K. Downing
  • Glenn Tipton
On October 15th 2023 PlasticSole and Broken Wolf teamed up to embark on a wild musical journey to accept a special challenge by Something Else Podcast. 💥

We took over a room at the legendary Robannas Studios in Birmingham, armed with our instruments and determination, ready to create some magic.

Inspired by the legends Brian May and Eddie Van Halen on the awesome Star Fleet Project, we set out to cover Judas Priest's "Breaking The Law", in a nod to the city and the delight at that song's unexpected appearance in the catchy KFC adverts. 🍗

Our heartfelt thanks to Noel Read Photography for capturing the the day and editing it in to the wonderful video you can see on our YouTube channel

From my first baseball game to the World Series - following the Texas Rangers

I couldn't be happier for the Texas Rangers after their incredible World Series victory last night. I've been a fan of the team since my first baseball game at Globe Life Field in August 2022, and it's been an amazing journey to watch them grow and succeed.

I've loved following the Rangers this season, even though it's meant staying up late to watch games from the UK. It's all been worth it, though, to see the team finally reach the top of the mountain.

Congratulations to the Rangers on an amazing season!

As a Brit, I've always been fascinated by American culture, and baseball is a big part of that.  So when I had the opportunity to visit the US in August 2022, I knew I had to go to a baseball game. I chose the Texas Rangers vs. Oakland Athletics game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and I'm so glad I did.

My wife and I arrived at the ballpark early to soak up the atmosphere. There were people of all ages and backgrounds, all excited to see the Rangers play. We visited the award winning vegan concession stand where we bought a hot dog, nachos and drinks, and the found our seats.

The game itself was amazing. The Rangers won, but it was more than just the score that made it so special. The stadium created a truly unique atmosphere.  We were also impressed by the skill and athleticism of the players.

One of the things I loved most about the game was the sense of community. Everyone was there to have a good time, and there was a real camaraderie among the fans. I also appreciated the fact that the game was affordable and accessible to people of all ages and incomes.

Before and during the game, I walked around the stadium and took some photos. I wanted to capture the memories of this special day. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to experience a baseball game at Globe Life Field. It was an unforgettable experience, and it made me fall in love with the sport.

If you're ever in the US during baseball season, I highly recommend going to a game. It's a truly unique and American experience.

Tomorrow's You Know 2023

PlasticSole

One of our beloved tracks "Tomorrows You Know" is making a grand return! This song holds a special place in my heart - it's one of our oldest and dearest, a track we used to kick off our live shows with as you can see here.

The original version was a bit of a hidden gem on our "Notice to the Parish Council" EP, but its catchy tune demanded the spotlight, so we decided it was time to give it a fresh spin, updating the sound and vibe to match where we are today!

"Tomorrow's You Know" by PlasticSole is a fast-paced indie rock pop anthem that bursts with energy and urgency. The song revolves around the theme of seizing the moment and not procrastinating when it comes to making important decisions in life.

The track kicks off with an infectious rhythm, setting the tone for the rest of the song. The lyrics portray a sense of anticipation, as the protagonist is waiting for a significant event to happen while being away from someone dear.

The first verse speaks of waiting for that special day when a loved one arrives, and the uncertainty of whether it will make the protagonist want to stay. The lyrics evoke a feeling of restlessness and excitement, hinting at the desire for a meaningful connection.

The chorus comes in with a catchy melody, emphasizing the importance of not delaying actions until the next day. The lines "If you leave it till tomorrow, I never thought that I would be the one to let you know" convey a sense of realization and regret that the protagonist must seize the opportunity now, without delay.

The song's bridge adds a touch of playfulness with the "Oo-oo la la la" phrase, adding to the overall dynamic and fun atmosphere.

The final verse revisits the idea of waiting for something to happen, this time using the metaphor of "sleeping on the job" and waiting for a metaphorical bomb to drop. The lyrics emphasize the tension and uncertainty in the protagonist's life, wondering if the awaited event will have a profound impact.

"Tomorrow's You Know" is a powerful indie rock pop track that encourages listeners to embrace the present and take action rather than waiting for the perfect moment. PlasticSole's high-energy performance and captivating lyrics make this song a standout addition to their repertoire, leaving audiences feeling exhilarated and inspired to make the most of every opportunity that comes their way.

Raw Talent Takes Center Stage: Tigercub at The Craufurd Arms

On Saturday 28th October, 2023, I had the privilege of witnessing Tigercub’s electrifying performance at The Craufurd Arms, Milton Keynes beating heart of the music scene. This small, independent venue with its intimate 200-capacity setting created the perfect atmosphere for a night of unforgettable music.

Tigercub, a rising star in the indie rock scene, brought their A-game, delivering a performance that was nothing short of phenomenal. The raw energy and passion they poured into every note resonated with the crowd, creating an electric connection that pulsed through the room.

The Craufurd Arms, known for championing small, up-and-coming talent, once again proved why it's the epicenter of Milton Keynes' music community. Its dedication to providing a platform for artists like Tigercub is commendable and essential for nurturing the next generation of musical greats.

The intimacy of the venue allowed for a close and personal experience with the band, something that's often lost in larger arenas. It felt like Tigercub was playing just for us, creating an unforgettable bond between the audience and the stage.

In a world dominated by mega-stadiums, venues like The Craufurd Arms remind us of the magic that can happen in more intimate spaces. Here, music isn't just heard, it's felt, experienced, and cherished.

If you're a music lover in Milton Keynes, The Craufurd Arms is your sanctuary. It's where the pulse of the local music scene beats strongest, and where unforgettable nights like these are born. Kudos to both Tigercub and The Craufurd Arms for an evening that will echo in the hearts of everyone present. 🎶🔥

2023-10-24 NOAHFINNCE, The Dome, Tufnell Park, London

Tonight was a special one! Took my daughter to her very first small venue gig outside of Milton Keynes to see her favorite artist, Noahfinnce, at the Tufnell Park Dome. The atmosphere was electric, and the music was absolutely phenomenal. It reminded me of my own youth, attending small metal gigs (Napalm Death, Love/Hate, etc) in Birmingham at venues just like this (though I think my parents are still grateful they didn’t get to take me to those). 🤘

Epic Collaborative Jam and Recording Session with Broken Wolf!

PlasticSole

I recall my former manager,  Steve Harvey, displaying a sign in his office that read, "Life begins at the end of your comfort zone." This message deeply resonated with me, and ever since, I've strived to live by it.

On Sunday 15th October, I ventured far beyond my usual boundaries. We were challenged by the  Something Else Podcast  team to collaborate with their band,  Broken Wolf , on a song. This entailed learning, coordinating a new arrangement, practicing, and then recording a fresh track all in one day. And that's precisely what we accomplished!

In the Flickr album below, you'll find a group of individuals I consider musical prodigies. Each of them possesses a natural talent that could easily land them a spot in a professional band like Oasis, Foo Fighters, or The Killers. And then there's me. I invest substantial effort, within my limited available time, to keep pace with the two musicians on the right from PlasticSole .

Sunday's undertaking truly stretched my abilities to the limit, requiring me to learn and record an entirely new piece of music in a single day!

I'm eager to share the results of today's endeavor with you, so you can assess how I fared!

A big thanks to Noel Read Photography for joining us and capturing our efforts on video. This way, you'll not only hear but also witness the process and observe how effortless it was for the four individuals standing before me.

What an incredible day it was! We had the immense pleasure of joining forces with the talented lads from  Broken Wolf  and  Something Else Podcast  for an unforgettable jamming and recording session. The energy in the room was off the charts!

A massive shoutout to our friends from  Broken Wolf  and  Something Else Podcast  for extending this fantastic opportunity to us. Collaborations like these are what make the music scene so vibrant and exciting!

A special thanks goes to  Noel Read Photography  for capturing all the candid moments and freezing them in time. Your skill and artistry truly shine through!

We're hard at work, fine-tuning the magic we created that day. Stay tuned, because we can't wait to share it with all of you very soon! 🎶✨

Police Woman

PlasticSole

I vividly recall an episode of Juliet Bravo where a courageous woman, held captive, ingeniously manipulated her captor. Posing as if she were arranging a casual afternoon tea with a friend, she discreetly dialed the police station and connected with our hero. Unaware of the call's urgency, our hero was taken aback. The captive insisted they modify their rendezvous plans, leaving them bewildered. In parting, the woman cryptically remarked, "And don't forget your hat, it suits you so well" Eventually, our hero deciphered the message: her police hat was her only 'tea-time' headwear. She raced to the rescue with unwavering determination.

"Police Woman" by PlasticSole is a lively indie rock pop anthem that playfully salutes the empowered figure of a female police officer. With its infectious energy and catchy tunes, it's an instant crowd-pleaser. The song's inspiration harks back to our fond memories of the TV show "Juliet Bravo". Much like "Lovely Rita" by The Beatles and "Step Into My Office, Baby" by Belle and Sebastian, the lyrics adopt a tongue-in-cheek style to honor this strong archetype while adding a touch of whimsy. It captures the essence of challenging societal norms and defying expectations with a sense of pride and confidence.

A Rainy September Stroll: Capturing the Beauty of Durham

As the crisp September air began to embrace the ancient city of Durham, I found myself embarking on a solitary adventure. While my son and wife were engrossed in the excitement of a University open day, I seized the opportunity to explore the historic streets, camera in hand.  The persistent drizzle did little to dampen my spirits, as I set out to capture the ethereal beauty of Durham, focusing primarily on its magnificent Cathedral.

Durham Cathedral: A Timeless Majesty

The heart of Durham, both geographically and spiritually, is undoubtedly its awe-inspiring Cathedral.  Through the lens of my camera, I sought to encapsulate its grandeur from various angles and vantage points.  From the banks of the River Wear to the charming nooks and crannies of the city's streets, each click was a tribute to the centuries of history that stood before me.

Majestic in Every Frame

The rain-slicked stones of the Cathedral's exterior seemed to shimmer, accentuating the intricate details of its Gothic architecture.  The centuries-old edifice seemed to defy time itself, a testament to the craftsmanship of those who built it.  As I meandered through the cloisters, the play of light and shadow revealed a cathedral that seemed to breathe with life.

Streets that Whisper History

While the Cathedral stood tall and proud, the streets surrounding it whispered tales of centuries gone by. Cobbled pathways, lined with quaint shops and charming residences, created a tapestry of urban history.  Each corner turned, every hidden alley discovered, painted a vivid picture of Durham's vibrant past.

Weathered Elegance

The persistent drizzle lent an air of melancholy to the city, casting a subtle veil over the streets. It was as if the weather itself paid homage to the resilience of Durham, a place where history and modernity coexist harmoniously.

Conclusion

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but marvel at the beauty that Durham had bestowed upon me.  Through the lens of my camera, I had captured a glimpse of a city that held within its stones the echoes of centuries. The rain, far from being a hindrance, had bestowed a unique character upon my photographs, a testament to the ever-evolving nature of this enchanting place.

Durham, with its Cathedral and streets, had revealed itself in all its rainy splendor. It was a day well spent, a walk well remembered, and a city forever etched in my memory.

A Glimpse into Academic Grandeur: Exploring Cambridge University

Stepping into the hallowed halls of Cambridge University is akin to entering a realm where history and intellect intertwine. Recently, I had the privilege of attending a University Open Day, where I was granted access to the venerable Kings College and the welcoming embrace of Lucy Cavendish College. Through the lens of my camera, I endeavored to capture the essence of these institutions, from the regal grandeur of Kings to the intimate charm of Lucy Cavendish.

Kings College: A Tapestry of Elegance

With its spires piercing the sky, Kings College stands as a testament to the architectural marvels of ages past. The intricate detailing of its façade and the tranquil beauty of its courtyard served as the perfect prelude to what lay within.

Regal Resplendence

As I entered the hallowed halls of Kings, I was immediately struck by the opulence that surrounded me. The grandeur of the dining room, with its soaring ceilings and ornate chandeliers, was a sight to behold. It was a place where centuries of scholars had gathered, their intellectual pursuits echoing in the very air.

The Library: A Sanctuary of Knowledge

In the heart of Kings College, the library stood as a sanctuary of wisdom. Rows upon rows of books, their spines worn with age, whispered tales of knowledge accumulated through the ages. The hushed reverence that filled the room was a testament to the enduring legacy of learning.

Accommodations Fit for Scholars

The rooms of Kings College exuded a timeless elegance, blending modern comfort with the echoes of centuries gone by. Each space seemed to beckon with a promise of quiet contemplation, a haven for academic pursuits.

Lucy Cavendish College: A Haven of Warmth

In contrast to the regality of Kings, Lucy Cavendish College welcomed me with an air of familiarity and warmth. The intimacy of its spaces, the cozy dining room, and the inviting accommodations, spoke of a community united by a shared pursuit of knowledge.

A Dining Room of Camaraderie

The dining room at Lucy Cavendish exuded a sense of camaraderie, where conversations flowed freely and friendships were forged over shared meals. It was a space that embodied the inclusive spirit of the college, a place where minds came together.

Cozy Corners of Comfort

The accommodations at Lucy Cavendish were a blend of comfort and functionality. Each room, though modest in size, exuded a sense of belonging. It was a place where ideas could be nurtured, and dreams could take root.

Library: Where Dreams Take Flight

The library at Lucy Cavendish, though more intimate in scale, was no less rich in resources. It was a space where the aspirations of scholars found wings, where the pursuit of knowledge was encouraged and celebrated.

Conclusion

My visit to Cambridge University was an experience that transcended the visual. It was an immersion into a world where the pursuit of knowledge is revered, where history lives and breathes within the walls. Through my photographs, I hope to share a glimpse of this extraordinary journey, an ode to the academic grandeur of Cambridge.

Sympathy for the Devil - Live at the Craufurd Arms

The Black Beans Of Monaco

PlasticSole

The cover for this single was taken by my brother, Simon, whilst he and I were on a day off from touring in the South of France with another band. We hired a car and drove around the Monaco Grand Prix Circuit many many times, in the wet. The funny thing was that because it was a left hand drive car, with a manual gear box, I was not used to changing gears with my right hand, so kept on crunching them, except when driving around the circuit, where every gear change was perfect, in timing and execution. Being a fan of motorsport video games, it is probably the public road that I have virtually driven around the most, so I knew layout and gear change points were ingrained on my muscle memory.

"The Black Beans of Monaco" is a heavy indie rock journey into a whimsical and surreal world of nonsensical stream of consciousness. Reminiscent of The Beatles' experimental track "Tomorrow's You Know" the song takes listeners on a rollercoaster ride through a landscape where bizarre and unexpected imagery intertwines with catchy melodies and powerful instrumentals.

We're thrilled to announce our latest single "The Black Beans Of Monaco" out on all streaming platforms today, September 1st! 🚀 Get ready for a musical journey that's bound to captivate your senses.

Bell Witch Bring Their Ethereal Doom to Oslo

On Tuesday, August 15th, 2023, Bell Witch brought their ethereal doom to Oslo in Hackney, London.  The band played a set of their signature slow, heavy, and atmospheric music, and the crowd was completely captivated.

The setlist was just their 83-minute, single-song album "Future’s Shadow Part 1: The Clandestine Gate" in it's entirety.  It is the first volume in a trilogy meant to loop eternally.  The band's sound was full and rich, and their live performance was even more powerful than their recorded output.

The crowd was mostly silent (and those that weren't were quickly told to be) as the band played, and by the end of the evening, everyone was completely transported.

If you're a fan of slow, heavy, and atmospheric music, then you definitely need to check out Bell Witch. They are one of the most unique and talented bands in the genre, and their live shows are truly unforgettable.

Life is a symphony, and for over half of my life, I've been harmonizing with friends, creating melodies that resonate through the years.  As the years go by, many of us find ourselves entangled in the hustle and bustle of daily life, often leaving behind passions and hobbies that once defined us.  However, there’s one thing that has remained constant for me – making music.  In this post, I want to share why I, a middle-aged man, continue to create music and the profound impact it has on my life, and how promoters like Jason Hall at the Craufurd Arms and the Boxmonster team have played an instrumental role in my bands journey, allowing us to continue performing live despite the challenges of age.

    Camaraderie and Lifelong Collaboration

They say music is the language of the soul, and my soul found its voice in the company of lifelong friends.  Together, we have shared the highs and lows, the joys and sorrows, and the beauty of creating music that reflects the chapters of our lives, from happy occasions, such as weddings and births, to the darkest of times, such as miscarriages and family deaths.  Our bond, forged over countless, gigs and recording sessions, has grown stronger with time.

There’s something deeply bonding about creating melodies, harmonies, and rhythms together, sharing not only our musical talents but also our personal stories and emotions.  While life’s responsibilities may pull us in different directions, our shared passion for music keeps us connected in a profound way.  In a world where relationships often evolve and change, the friendships forged through our musical collaborations remain steadfast.  The camaraderie of collaborating with friends who understand the rhythm of each others hearts is a gift that keeps on giving.

Health Benefits of an Active Hobby

Over time, I've come to deeply appreciate the value of an active pursuit like music. Beyond its creative aspect, music has emerged as a healing force for both mind and body.  Engaging with instruments, singing, and crafting lyrics not only brings immense joy but also acts as a powerful stress-reliever.  The harmonies we create provide a haven, offering solace from life's challenges and a space for emotional expression.

However, music's significance transcends artistic creation; it's also a means of nurturing our overall well-being.  Participating in activities like playing instruments and singing generates a genuine sense of satisfaction, with positive implications for mental health.  The act of immersing myself in musical creation, momentarily setting aside daily pressures, is an act of self-care.  Furthermore, playing music serves as an effective tool for maintaining mental sharpness and boosting cognitive skills as we age.

    Purpose in Collaborations

Time is a river, and amidst its flow, we seek purpose and direction, and as our lives have evolved, so have our musical endeavours.  The need for a purpose to our collaborations became clear – something to give our music-making a direction and meaning, and each note we play carries the weight of meaning, making our music a reflection of our shared experiences and aspirations..  Setting goals for each project, like creating a certain number of songs within a year, has not only pushed us creatively but also strengthened our collaborations.  Having a clear objective has provided a sense of accomplishment and motivation to keep refining our craft and pushing our boundaries.

Music as a Pillar for Enduring Friendships

In the realm of male friendships, it’s often noted that activities shared side by side form the foundation of these relationships.  Unfortunately, when those activities come to an end, many male friendships tend to drift apart.  Making music with a purpose has given us a way to ensure that our friendships endure and go from strength to strength.  The shared experiences and challenges we face during our musical journey act as pillars that support the foundation of our connections.

    Gratitude for Promoters' Support

In a world that often celebrates youth and novelty, I'm immensely grateful for the recent support we've received from promoters like Jason Hall at the Craufurd Arms and the Boxmonster team.  Despite not being a young and upcoming band, with the luxury of committing to lots of midweek gigs, they saw the value in our music and offered us opportunities to perform live.  Their support means the world to us and has been a lifeline, allowing the flame of our passion to continue to burn, allowing us to share our music with a live audience and connect with our supporters in person, and inspiring us to keep creating music for the world to hear.

    Thanks for reading

As the journey of life continues, the music never stops.  For me, as a middle-aged man, music isn’t about chasing fame or fortune. it has become an integral part of my being, preserving lifelong friendships, nurturing mental and physical well-being, setting meaningful goals, expressing ourselves in ways words alone can’t convey, and cherishing the promoters who continue to believe in our passion.  Music is not just a pastime; it's the soundtrack of my life, that has truly been a guiding light in my life, and I’m excited to see where this journey continues to lead us – together.

Capturing Memories: A Picturesque Getaway to The Lizard, Cornwall

    https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjAPNG3

I'm pleased to share my recent vacation adventure to The Lizard in Cornwall, a place of stunning landscapes, charming coastal walks, and captivating sunsets.  As always, my trusty camera accompanied me on this journey, capturing the beauty of every moment.  But this time, there's a special twist - some of the incredible shots were taken by none other than my talented daughter, adding her unique perspective to the mix.

    Cliffside Circular Walk from Porthleven

Our vacation kicked off with a breathtaking cliffside circular walk starting from Porthleven. The rugged coastline, crashing waves, and the salty breeze combined to create a truly mesmerizing experience.  My daughter had her camera ready to go, and her shots perfectly encapsulate the raw beauty of this landscape.  From towering cliffs to hidden coves, the walk was a visual feast that we're thrilled to share with you.

    Sunset Magic: Mullion to Penzance

One of the highlights of our trip was witnessing a sunset that painted the sky with hues of gold, pink, and orange.  The view from Mullion to Penzance was simply enchanting, and we were lucky enough to be there during the Lands End Fireworks.  Capturing the vivid bursts of light against the backdrop of the setting sun was a challenge, but the results were more than worth it.  These shots truly encapsulate the magic of that evening.

A Day Trip to St. Ives

St. Ives, with its picturesque harbor, quaint streets, and artistic vibe, was a delightful day trip.  The play of light and shadow on the colorful houses and the shimmering waters provided endless opportunities for photography.  We strolled through narrow lanes, enjoyed the local cuisine, and of course, captured the essence of this charming town through our lenses.

    Exploring Glendurgan Gardens

Our visit to the National Trust Glendurgan Gardens was like stepping into a lush paradise.  Amidst vibrant blooms, winding paths, and hidden corners, we uncovered the beauty of nature's canvas.  The highlight of this garden expedition was undoubtedly the maze, a whimsical labyrinth that offered not only a fun challenge but also some fantastic photo opportunities.

I hope you enjoy these glimpses of our vacation as much as we enjoyed capturing them.  Cornwall's rugged coastline, charming towns, and vibrant gardens provided the perfect backdrop for our photography escapades.  Don't forget to click on the Flickr album link to see our photos and experience the magic of The Lizard through our lenses.
